About Us

Xavier Learning Community (XLC) is a Jesuit institution nestled in the Chiang Rai region of northern Thailand — a place chosen deliberately for its proximity to the ethnic minority communities and cross-border populations it was founded to serve. Born from conversations among Thai Jesuits in 2008 and brought to life through the generosity of donors, partners, and the wider Jesuit network, XLC opened its doors to its first students in 2016, offering a holistic education that integrates academic formation with pastoral care, leadership development, and a deep sense of social responsibility. Today, XLC stands as a living testament to the belief that access to quality education is not a privilege reserved for the few, but a right that every young person — regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or economic background — deserves to enjoy and build their future upon.

Xavier Learning Community is a Jesuit founded college based in Thailand. It is situated in Mae Chan District in the Province of Chiangrai.  XLC is a residential institute that envisions itself as a culturally diverse institution for uplifting and empowering young people, aimed at educating young people – especially ethnic groups in northern Thailand and neighboring countries – to become humane and competent leaders and to reach their full potential based on the Jesuit tradition. We provide opportunities to develop professional expertise and skills necessary to live and survive in the 21st century. XLC is committed to forming men and women of integrity, working for and with others to build a just and harmonious world.

Vision Mission

Xavier Learning Community exists to provide quality, values-based higher education to young people from ethnic minority communities and marginalized backgrounds in northern Thailand and neighbouring countries, empowering them to overcome the barriers of poverty, language, and circumstance. Rooted in the rich Ignatian tradition, XLC forms students not merely as competent graduates, but as whole persons of integrity — intellectually capable, spiritually grounded, and deeply committed to the service of others. Inspired by the Jesuit ideal of men and women for others, we walk alongside our students as companions on the journey, nurturing their God-given potential and sending them forth as compassionate leaders who will work for a more just, reconciled, and harmonious world.

ABOUT US

Our Vision Statement

To create humane and competent leaders who contribute to a just and harmonious world.

At Xavier Learning Community — named after Saint Francis Xavier, one of the founding companions of the Society of Jesus — our vision flows from the heart of the Ignatian tradition: to find God in all things, and to place that encounter in the service of others. We are called not merely to educate minds, but to form the whole person — cura personalis — attending with care and intentionality to the intellectual, spiritual, moral, and social development of every student entrusted to our community. Inspired by the Jesuit ideal of becoming men and women for others, our students are not formed for their own success alone, but are shaped and sent forth to be agents of reconciliation, justice, and hope in a world that is deeply in need of both. We draw from the rich Ignatian pedagogy — reflective, relational, and transformative — walking alongside our students as companions on the journey, challenging them to think critically, act justly, and lead with a conscience always directed toward the greater good, ad majorem Dei gloriam. This is our vision — not a distant ideal, but a living mission, renewed each day in the lives of young people who are discovering that true leadership is, at its deepest root, an act of love.

ABOUT US

Our Mission

To provide quality education to underprivileged, minority, and cross-border students.

At Xavier Learning Community, our mission is not accidental — it is a deliberate and compassionate choice to go to the peripheries, to seek out those whom the world has too often overlooked, and to place the full weight of our resources, our relationships, and our hearts in their service. Inspired by the Jesuit call to minister where the need is greatest, we direct our apostolic energy toward young people who face the greatest barriers to education — those from underprivileged families who lack the financial means to access opportunity, those from ethnic minority communities whose languages, cultures, and identities have been marginalised by dominant systems, and those who have crossed borders in search of safety, dignity, and a future worth hoping for. We believe, in the tradition of Ignatius of Loyola, that quality education is not a privilege reserved for the few — it is a fundamental expression of human dignity, and therefore a matter of justice. At XLC, quality does not mean exclusivity; it means excellence in the service of the vulnerable. It means bringing the best of Ignatian pedagogy — reflective, relational, and transformative — to those who need it most, forming each student not only in knowledge and skill, but in the conviction that their life has meaning, their voice has worth, and their gifts belong to the world. In choosing to serve the underprivileged, the minority, and the cross-border student, we do not see ourselves as doing something extraordinary — we see ourselves as simply being faithful to the mission of Christ, the example of Saint Francis Xavier, and the long tradition of Jesuit education that has always found its truest expression at the edges, among the least, and in the company of those who hunger most deeply for a chance to flourish.

Magis Excellence in service of the vulnerable

ABOUT US

Our Focus

Empowering young people from ethnic minorities (hill tribes) and neighboring countries (Laos, Myanmar).

At the heart of XLC’s mission is a deep commitment to empowering young people who have long been overlooked by mainstream educational systems. Our students come primarily from ethnic minority communities — including hill tribe groups such as the Akha, Karen, Lahu, and Shan peoples — living in the highland regions of northern Thailand, as well as young men and women from neighbouring countries including Laos and Myanmar. Many of these students grow up in remote villages where access to quality schooling is limited, where poverty is a daily reality, and where the path to higher education can seem not just difficult, but impossible. Language barriers, cultural differences, lack of documentation, and financial hardship all compound the challenges they face. XLC exists precisely for these young people — to meet them where they are, walk alongside them, and equip them with the education, skills, and formation they need to build dignified lives and contribute meaningfully to their communities. In choosing to focus on those most often left behind, XLC affirms a foundational Jesuit conviction: that talent and potential are not determined by ethnicity, nationality, or economic background, but are gifts found in every young person, waiting to be nurtured and given room to flourish.

Ethnic Minority Students from hill tribe groups — including the Akha, Karen, Lahu, and Shan peoples
Neighbouring Countries Young men and women from Laos and Myanmar who cross borders in search of education, opportunity, and a better future.
Overcoming Real Barriers Language gaps, lack of documentation, poverty, and cultural differences make higher education seem out of reach — XLC removes these obstacles.
Nurturing Hidden Potential Rooted in Jesuit conviction, XLC believes talent knows no ethnicity or background — every young person deserves the chance to flourish.
